Prisons as punishment?

The Creative Commons License does not cover the above cartoon, the copyright of which if still existing, I do not own.

The Times reports here on guidelines issued by Scotland's North Britain's Chief Inspector of Prisons, it's only a short article but quite incredible.

Apparently: "PRISONERS should be addressed by their first name or called Mr or Mrs, given clean underwear regularly and daily fruit and vegetables ... Wardens should knock before entering cells, and prisoners must be helped to contact the European Court of Human Rights to complain about alleged maltreatment."

The money quote comes from Andrew Coyle a Professor of Prison Studies at King's College London (which sounds like another taxpayer funded sinecure to me*):

"It is not about being soft on prisoners. It is about giving them access to basic things such as fresh air."

No. No. No.

The whole point of prison is about denying them access to basic things such as freedom and fresh air.

* I reckon that with his job, Ruth Kelly, the Secretary of State for Communities, and the "dozen commissioners" for "the Commission on Integration and Cohesion" all three mentioned on my blog this week, there must be at least savings of £750,000 pa to the taxpayer by getting rid of them all and the only difference we'd notice is less taxes.
